Big Idea
When institutions shut Black doctors and nurses out, Williams built new ones, and those institutions trained generations of Black medical professionals.
Before Class
Students read the profile of Daniel Hale Williams, including the Key Dates and Sources.
Discussion Questions
- Why did Williams believe Chicago needed a hospital like Provident, open to Black patients, doctors, and nurses?
- The profile describes the 1893 operation more precisely than the popular claim of the “first open-heart surgery.” Why do historians care about stating firsts precisely?
- Williams taught at Meharry without pay. What might have motivated him to invest so heavily in training others?
- Which mattered more to Williams’s legacy: a single famous operation or the institutions he built? Why?
Activity
Students read the Illinois State Archives presentation of Williams’s 1889 letter to Governor Joseph Fifer, written after the governor appointed him to the state Board of Health. They identify the letter’s purpose and tone, then use the profile to discuss how public recognition of this kind might have helped Williams gather support for Provident Hospital two years later. To close, students list the institutions in the profile that Williams founded or reshaped and rank them by long-term impact, explaining their reasoning.
