Big Idea
Harriet Tubman’s documented record as liberator, spy, and soldier is remarkable enough without legend, and historians have worked to separate the two.
Before Class
Students read the profile of Harriet Tubman, including the Key Dates and Sources.
Discussion Questions
- After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 made free states unsafe, Tubman kept returning to Maryland. What does that choice tell us about her?
- Why did Tubman often guide people all the way to Canada rather than stop in the northern states?
- Early accounts said Tubman freed hundreds on the Underground Railroad; modern historians say about seventy. Why does the more accurate figure matter?
- Tubman planned the Combahee River raid but was never regularly paid by the army. What does her treatment reveal about the limits of recognition for Black women in the Civil War?
Activity
Students read a short passage from Bradford’s Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman and the profile’s note that Bradford mixed documented events with embellishment. In small groups (20–30 minutes), they sort the claims in the passage into three columns: confirmed by the profile, contradicted by it, and not addressed. Groups then discuss why Tubman, who could not read or write, depended on others to tell her story, and how historians such as Kate Clifford Larson used ledgers, court records, and pension files to test those accounts.
