C.T. Vivian stood on the courthouse steps in Selma and confronted Sheriff Jim Clark’s refusal to allow Black citizens to register to vote. Clark struck him in the face. The blow was broadcast on national television. Vivian did not step back. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
