Historical Record
James Bevel was among the most tactically creative strategists of the civil rights movement. He convinced Dr. King to allow children to march in Birmingham in 1963 — a decision that forced the nation to see the violence of segregation with undeniable clarity. He also conceived the march from Selma to Montgomery that resulted in the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
