Historical Record
James Farmer co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1942 and organized the original Freedom Rides in 1961. Arrested and sent to Parchman Farm, Farmer refused to accept bail — turning his imprisonment into a strategic asset. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.
