Arrested on Good Friday, 1963, Dr. King was placed in solitary confinement. In response to a letter from eight white Alabama clergymen urging patience, he wrote his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” — one of the defining documents of American moral philosophy. He was arrested twenty-nine times in total.
