Appomattox Court House

Appomattox, Virginia

Where General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865 in Wilmer McLean's parlor — ending the principal armed phase of the Civil War. Within months, the Thirteenth Amendment had abolished chattel slavery in the United States.
