Where U.S. Army Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, informing the people of Texas that “all slaves are free,” more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth was celebrated by Black Texans and the Black diaspora as Freedom Day for more than 150 years before becoming a federal holiday in 2021.
