Mound Bayou
Founded in 1887 by formerly enslaved Isaiah T. Montgomery and Benjamin T. Green on land carved out of the Mississippi Delta. Self-governed, self-policed, and economically self-sufficient through the early 20th century. Booker T. Washington called it “the most successful colored community in the world.” A major hub of organizing during the civil rights era; Dr. T. R. M. Howard's Mound Bayou home was a sanctuary for movement workers including Medgar Evers.
