Voting Rights
Selma
Dallas County, Alabama
Center of the 1965 Voting Rights movement. Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church served as the staging ground for all three Selma to Montgomery marches and as a sanctuary throughout the campaign. The murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson by an Alabama State Trooper in nearby Marion on February 18, 1965 catalyzed the decision to march to Montgomery. The campaign directly produced the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
