Barbara Jordan

1936 – 1996

Texas Southern University. Boston University Law. First Black woman elected to the Texas Senate, and the first Black woman from the South elected to the U.S. House. Her July 25, 1974 speech opening the Nixon impeachment hearings is one of the great American addresses of the 20th century.
