Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture)

1941 – 1998

Howard University. Freedom Rider at 19. Chairman of SNCC from 1966 to 1967. Introduced the phrase “Black Power” into the national vocabulary in a June 1966 speech in Greenwood, Mississippi. Later took the name Kwame Ture and lived in Guinea as a Pan-Africanist organizer.
